So, I Guess I’m Racist…

15 Jul

It’s been hard to ignore the Lebron James saga that culminated in “The Decision” last week. It’s a story with plenty of legs, the most recent of which has “the voice for all black people” Jesse Jackson declaring that Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cavs and writer of an angry rant about James, is a racist with a “slave-owner mentality.”

Evidently I have one too.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve heard from the man the media seems to think speaks for all of us (newsflash, he doesn’t. Black people are segmented and of varying opinions, just like any other race). How can you compare slavery with somebody’s who’s worth more than we’ll ever imagine?

Gilbert called James “narcissistic” and “cowardly,” among other things.

…and I gotta agree. I mean to surround yourself with children and stage a one-hour “event” that spits in the face of your hometown…that takes a lot of balls. I mean really? Kids? Are they supposed to tug at our hearts? Make us feel empathy for you? This isn’t a “We Are the World” special. It’s basketball.

I don’t argue with James’s right to head to Miami. I’m looking forward to seeing (how quickly the Heat’s arrogance culminates in a karma-induced injury) how they compete with the rest of the league. But come on man…there’s no doubt James is a beast who’ll be in the Hall of Fame. He’ll just forever be marked as the dude who broke the hearts of a city for attention.

That’s like me jumping on my radio station of choice (NPR son! I would say WKYS or something, but there’s too many songs about false wealth and bling. NPR’s bling content ratio isn’t that high), and telling a girlfriend: “Umm, so this has been a really hard decision for me. And I’ve thought this over, asking everybody (especially my mama) for their opinion. It hurts me to say this, but I’m dumping you and moving on to hotter girl X. Mama agrees, you’re not that hot.” Discretion man…and the lack thereof.

That completes my rant for the day. And now, to practice…

Speaking of which, the Ndelible mixtape is in the final stages! Free musical goodies in preparation for the second album shall soon be here.

So…this year has been great for DC sports!

07 Jan

…or not. In an effort to be a better blog admin (and as a means to lament on a horrible year DC sports wise), I’m up writing.

Quick thoughts, volume 43…

  • The Redskins still have my support. I say good riddance to Mr. Zorn…he may seem like a nice dude, but he’s not fit for coaching. That ol’ played out, let’s run the same screen every play nonsense was stupid. I hope Shanahan comes in and makes some good changes…because change is what we need (word to the overused word from the 08 election)
  • The Wizards also have my support. They did a job on the 76ers the other night…and then got did by the Cavs tonight. This Gilbert Arenas nonsense doesn’t make any sense to me. The guy seems like a smart and self-depreciating fellow. His tweets suggest that…but to bring a gun to your locker room? Come on, man… Eh, we all mistakes. Sometimes I wonder if a Redskins style cleansing is needed for them as well….
  • To those here for music news…the third CD is still under way. Thanks to all for the kind words and support expressed over the last few.  A bunch of random folk have been saying good stuff about Ndelible performances, as well. Had three people tell they’ve heard the group in the past year in various places. I’m really excited about where we’re heading this year. The radio may still be playing a bunch of crap, but good music always wins. Actually, let me temper my cynical side…I’ve heard Maxwell, Jay Electronica, and Stevie Wonder on mainstream “urban” stations within the past month. There’s hope…
  • Speaking of the 08 election (look up if you’re skimming)…I’m still in awe that Barack Obama is my president. I’ve been listening to this wonderful track from pianist Robert Glasper of late…def worth a watch. I saw him hit with Maxwell in Bmore…he’s one of the best piano players of this generation. If you haven’t picked up his latest album Double Booked, do so with the quickness. But until then, enjoy this:
