As Dilla’s birthday nears (Feb 8th), events are happening across the globe celebrating a life that touched many. Instrumentals so often take the backseat to whatever rapper is on a track, but in Dilla’s case an awareness and appreciation for his mastery are evident (and deserved). Just search “Dilla” on twitter any given day and hear the resounding chorus of a grateful community. Though I count myself in the category of folks who were introduced to his work after his passing, I’m thankful for friends who helped me delve not only into his output, but also that of those he influenced: Common, The Roots, D’Angelo, Slum Village, Erykah Badu, etc. His discography reads like a who’s who of folks on our iPods.

This is my spin on two of his most famous works. I played with the timing a bit. Hope you enjoy. RIP Dilla.

Many thanks to David James on vocals

The end samples an orchestral piece by Miguel Atwood Ferguson. His album, Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes, has finally been released on amazon.com. It’s gorgeous…definitely worth a purchase.

Ndelible Rehearsal Footage

28 Apr

So Ndelible’s drummer Ron B is a beast. He took this footage of one of our rehearsals and added a bit of video magic to it in post. I’m on the right side playing EWI/Strings. This song (Coldplay’s Rush of Blood to the Head) is gonna be on our mixtape, which will be coming out in the next few months. The mixtape will be completely gratis…free, free, free. The second album, not so much!  :)

Hope you all enjoy

Personnel: Dave James (Vocals/Acoustic Guitar), Myron “Q Dot” (El. Guitar), Tommy (Bass), Ron B (drums), Sam Buck (keys), Me (EWI/Sax).

Essay Break…for the purple one

01 Dec

Trying to finish this wonderful 15 page paper on identity politics…

But I had to share this. One of my favorite artists ever, truly a master of all things musical, Prince, plays some of his stuff (but mostly covers) on acoustic guitar. The “Sweet Thing” cover is ridiculous…

Good look to Ndelible’s David James on the link.

Alright, back to this paper. Aunt Dar (aka the biggest purple hippie of all) I hope you see this! Belated Happy Birthday! Love ya

I know, I know…

07 Nov

I’ve been mighty MIA…and I apologize for that. Work, school, and the grad school search are taking a toll. Can’t complain, though. God’s good…life’s good. It’s all…good, if busy. This is what’s been on my mind recently. Not excited at all, but…

Ndelible is featured on Okayplayer.com!!!!

For those of you who may not be familiar, the site was created by The Roots’ Drummer Questlove. Getting on here is huge…and to get such a good album review is crazy. You can read the whole thing at the link, but my favorite part’s yonder:

Time and Chance--Ndelible

“Time & Chance, the first album by Ndelible is a worthy introduction to what I hope is a long-lasting career. The musical nuances are delightful and exciting to what have become mundane radio ears. The lyrics are thoughtful, as if David James sees himself as a vessel (I mean, the dude?s name is David James) and his voice is not some crooner?s silky timbre, but rather a gutty imperfection, untampered with in a world of perfect thin-voiced love singers. But like I said, sincerity always wins. Always. And if Ndelible continues to be sincere, then indelible they will be, indeed.”

You can pick up the digital album here. Physical CD’s are yonder.

In other news…

To all you MJ fans out there, DJ Jazzy Jeff just released a nice Michael Jackson compilation (He’s the King, I’m the DJ)…I’ve had it on rotation for a minute now. It’s available for free here.

Another great record from a local cat by the name of Zo just came out. He (along with members of the Foreign Exchange) have made a pretty cool album that remakes some classic tunes (in the Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers vein). It’s also available for free here.

Lastly, just saw an interesting profile of Common. Gotta love positivity in rap. Sometimes it’s harder to find than Bin Laden

Tonight was…

pretty cool.

The Washington Post gig was fun. Seems like they’re gonna be funding some worthy initiatives in the education world. Met some great people there as well. Sam Buck (of Ndelible) was kind enough to accompany me…showed yet again he’s one of the best piano players out.

To Mrs Harvey — who asked about the “Mr. Magic” video, I’m posting it here for you. Hope you enjoy.

Also, I think I’m gonna be playing w/ David James this Friday at this spot in DC called Bloombars.
